D.va is the most versatile option out of any tank heroes in the game at the moment. She has had several reworks and tweaks and still manages to be a top a tier pick, fitting in basically every popular team composition.

D.va has a very spammable movement ability, the Boosters with an insane five seconds cooldown. She also has intense offensive capabilities with her Fusion Cannons and Micro Missiles combined with the obnoxious Defense Matrix which offers valuable protection. D.Va’s ultimate, Self-Destruct, is likewise very useful both defensively and offensively as a zoning tool if nothing more. This versatility makes her a favorable pick up for players who are always aiming for a win.

General tips

  • Practice your aim with the Light Gun as well. Hitting shots when you are out of your mech and in baby D.Va form is insanely important if you want your suit back sooner. You can deal respectable damage and picking off squishy supports or offense heroes is certainly possible.
  • Your Defense Matrix can only last for two seconds maximum if you use it continuously from full charge, while having a one second delay before it starts re-charging. Try just tapping it more often, providing brief protection instead of using it as a barrier like Reinhardt’s or Winston’s shield.
  • You can throw your mech while Self-Destructing if you use it when your Boosters are active. The momentum it gives depends on how much you have traveled with your Boosters. If you want to fly it far away, use it instantly after you used Boosters, otherwise activate it later if you would prefer it to lose momentum and drop below sooner.
  • Using Micro Missiles at long range is really ineffective, avoid doing that. You want to use it in combination with your Fusion Cannons at close range. You can also start cooking up your missiles while flying with your Boosters and having your Defense Matrix active. This way you can unleash huge burst damage to enemies without taking the risk of getting damaged yourself.

Hero specific tips

  • Always be careful about the enemy team delaying your death, making your team lose valuable time before re-grouping. Since you are a tank, there are times when you are the last man standing of your team, making it easy for the opposition to mock and delay you once you are out of your mech. Try to fly into a death pit instead as soon as you know the fight is lost.
  • After using your Self-Destruct in the middle of a fight you should consider hugging it until it explodes. Self-Destruct no longer deals damage to yourself, so you can force the enemy team into a dangerous position if they want to finish your baby D.Va off.
  • When playing against strong projectile ultimate abilities like Rocket Barrage or Graviton Surge, constantly keep track of their progression. You can completely mess up the enemy team’s game plan by eating a valuable ultimate with your Defense Matrix.
  • Hitting enemies with your Boosters can lead to environmental kills on certain maps. Keep this in mind and try to push them off a ledge into a death pit. Additionally, you should almost always use your quick melee immediately after you hit someone with your Boosters to do a sweet little burst of damage.

+1

If your mech gets destroyed close to your spawn point, it can be worth going back and switching to something else then back to D.Va again in order to get back your mech suit instantly. Even if you lose a bit on the ultimate meter, the time you save by this technique can absolutely make up for it.

+2

You can use your Self-Destruct on the edge of a platform, slowly pushing it with your baby D.va to fall down beneath just as it explodes. This cheeky technique can catch your foes off-guard, making them fall into a false sense of security.

D.va is terribly fun to play due to her versatile kit, and while fun might not be the first thing you think about when you want to grind the ladder and win games, she is always a safe off-tank hero.
