People tend to think of cowboys and outlaws as lone wolves, but it could not be further from the truth when it comes to McCree. He is a powerful damage dealer and anti-flanker who excels at fending off the likes of Genji and Tracer. His kit enables you to play both in an offensive and defensive style.

The Peacekeeper is a deadly weapon at close to medium range and also helps tremendously with breaking down barriers or dealing with tanks using your secondary firing mode, Fan the Hammer. The Flashbang can be used to initiate a fight or also to disrupt incoming divers combined with your Combat Roll. Last, but not least, your Deadeye ability can turn a seemingly lost team fight into a complete team wipe.

General tips

  • Usually, you want to stick close to the core of your team. McCree is really susceptible to divers due to having few health points and a lack of a real movement ability. By staying with your team you can make sure your backline is well protected and you can also deal chip-damage from the safety of your barriers.
  • Your Peacekeeper is extremely accurate – try to always aim for the head. From close to medium range you are one of the most deadly offense heroes, so try to focus on targets that are not too far away. Occasionally though, you can finish off fleeing low HP targets with just a shot or two.
  • When playing against tanky lineups make sure you use your Fan the Hammer efficiently. Bursting a few clips into a Reinhardt or Winston barrier can lead to your team winning the shield battle overwhelmingly.
  • Be mindful about using your Deadeye ultimate ability, as it turns you into an extremely vulnerable target. Make sure to communicate with your team so they can try to keep you alive. If you find the opportunity, you can flank behind enemy lines and surprise them with your deadly ultimate, but remember, you are not going to enjoy your team’s protection in this case.

Character specific tips

  • Your Flashbang is a really versatile tool and can be used offensively and defensively as well. You can stun a Reinhardt over his shield if you aim it correctly, enabling your team to push through. Also, you can stun a deflecting Genji too if you throw it next to him, but you might want to wait for him to double jump first. That way you can aim below him, which is an easier and more reliable way of stunning him while he is deflecting.
  • Combat Roll is not nearly the strongest movement ability in the game, but the fact that it reloads your gun is extremely important. When chasing an enemy, don’t be afraid to use it as soon as you are out of ammo to avoid the reload animation. Plus, as soon as you spawn after a death, spam it as long as you are near the fight again.
  • Try to use Deadeye from a height advantage when you have the opportunity. Being above your opponents makes it easier to maintain vision on them, which should be your main focus while using this ability.
  • After landing a successful Flashbang, you should go for quick headshots instead of trying to finishing off targets with your Fan the Hammer. Even though it is tempting to do that, as it can burst down tanks more quickly, the wide spread makes it too unreliable.

+1

  • It is possible to stop Dva’s mech while it is flying towards you with Self Destruction cooking up by throwing a Flashbang in it’s face.

+2

  • Activating Deadeye fully reloads your weapon, even if you cancel it immediately. Similar to using Combat Roll for reloading, there might be some rare situations where you want to use Deadeye just to reload faster.

McCree is an easy to learn, but hard to master hero in Overwatch. The basics are simple, but make sure your practice your aim a lot against bots in Training Mode. Consistent, solid aim is really important if you plan to be a successful McCree player.
