Mercy is probably the most played support hero in Overwatch. She is an inviting character for newcomers, due to the fact that precise aiming is not a requirement to play her at a decent level.

She has two passive abilities: Regeneration and Angelic Descent. The former takes care of her health issues, automatically healing herself when not taking damage, the latter ability is more of a semi-passive as you need to press and hold your jump button to slow down the speed of your descent from heights. The Caduceus Staff is her primary support tool, allowing Mercy to either restore 60 health per second or give a 30% damage boost to the tethered friendly target. She also has the Caduceus Blaster pistol, but that is primarily reserved for emergency situations.

Guardian Angel is her re-positioning tool, allowing Mercy to fly towards allies to provide quick assistance – or to bail out of horrible situations. Resurrect is a remarkably strong part of  the hero’s kit, enabling her to bring back a dead team mate to life with full health. Lastly, her ultimate ability Valkyrie literally turns Mercy into an angel, making it possible to fly all over the place while providing massive amounts of healing or damage boost to your allies.

General Tips

  • Focus a lot on staying alive and supporting your team. Don’t rush in to resurrect a fallen team mate instantly, think about your options. When you do have the chance to pick from several dead allies, most of the time you want to prioritize tanks due to their high health pools.
  • Your Valkyrie ability is extremely strong, do not hesitate to use it offensively in the hope of winning an important team fight. By healing multiple targets at once, you can make sure your allies can be overly aggressive. Cleaning up with your whole team being damage boosted works like a charm as well.
  • Focus your damage boost on allies like Junkrat, Pharah or Widowmaker. Helping them with picking off targets from a distance is a good way of starting a battle with an advantage.
  • Hitting enemies with your Caduceus Blaster builds your ultimate meter faster. In general, you don’t want to pull it out and start shooting people, but if you are certain you lost a team fight and you are about to die, start shooting like a maniac.

Hero specific tips

  • Boosting Pharah’s Rocket Barrage with damage is something that most Mercy players do, but you should also think about other combos. Boosting your McCree, Soldier, Reaper, Roadhog, Bastion or even Torbjörn and Hanzo when they use their ultimate abilities can lead to way more eliminations.
  • Abuse Guardian Angel. Pressing your jump hotkey while flying to allies boosts your momentum. Mastering this technique and knowing when to use it can aid you a lot in surviving grim scenarios.
  • Your Resurrect has a range of 5 meters and reduces your movement speed by 75% while casting it. We previously mentioned that you should be thoughtful about using this ability, but positioning yourself behind cover is an important aspect to bring up too. Communicate and ask for your team barriers or try to stay behind walls if possible.
  • On several maps you have the option to hover above death pits with your Angelic Descent while healing or damage boosting your allies. This way you make it harder for enemy flankers to get close to you and you are always able to fly out of there with your Guardian Angel if necessary.

+1

  • When playing against a Widowmaker, you can occasionally man up and aggressively take her out with your Caduceus Blaster while Valkyrie is active. It can be a safer choice than trying to dodge her shots.

+2

  • Use the Caduceus Staff line of sight mechanics to your advantage. It takes a few seconds for the beam to break when your target leaves your field of view. Stay behind walls and get in and out of cover every few seconds to heal, instead of showing yourself to the enemy team all the time.

When playing Mercy, positioning is most important and you should think about it constantly. Optimizing your heal and damage boost targets, making sure you do not resurrect hastily and that you do not use your Valkyrie when you just got Graviton Surged are certainly important too. But above all: Positioning, Positioning, Positioning!
