“8 + 2” NO-BRAINER TIPS

FOR PLAYING Hanzo

The power level of Hanzo has always been a highly discussed topic in the Overwatch community. Higher level teams barely picked him because of inconsistency, but lower SR players were furious about the one shot potential of Scatter Arrow. A rework was long overdue, and Blizzard duly delivered.

However, they literally managed to turn the table, as the current version of Hanzo is less reliable and annoying in low skill level games, but insanely powerful in the right hands at higher SR.

General tips

  • Most newbie Hanzo players are always trying to use Dragonstrike against a group of enemies, hoping for that juicy play of the game. Using your ultimate to secure solo kills and to zone the enemy team out is extremely powerful and more valuable in many situations.
  • The new Lunge ability is phenomenal for offensive and defensive plays alike. You can jump towards any direction mid-air, enabling you to chase for kills if they happen to break line of sight, while also giving you the opportunity to dodge flankers and mess up their aim.
  • Sonic Arrow is an important tool not only for getting kills, but to provide information for your team. With the 6 seconds duration time and 12 seconds cooldown, it is quite spammable too. Make sure you use it well, don’t just shoot it towards the middle of a teamfight.
  • Storm Arrows is the new ability in place of Scatter Arrows. Even though you can’t oneshot people any more, the new ability gives you flexibility. You don’t suffer any movement speed decrease while using it, and it is also possible to hold them back instead of spamming them all out in rapid succession. Bursting barriers and tanks are really nice, but it also gives you a more reliable ability against flankers.

Hero specific tips

  • As we previously mentioned, going for big teamwipes with your Dragonstrike is not always an optimal play, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it if you have the chance to combo with someone. If you have Graviton Surge or Earthshatter ready, you should definitely try and combo to secure the teamfight.
  • You will definitely get dove by Winstons in lots of games. You want to time your Lunge just as he hits the ground as it will give you extra momentum mid-air, pushing you out of his Tesla Cannon range. Bursting him with your Storm Arrows is really easy once his bubble is broken.
  • Don’t forget, if you charge up your shot and start wall climbing, you maintain that charge. This can be really useful on some maps as you can go for quick shots without actually exposing yourself to the enemy team. Practice the timings so you won’t fully climb walls, but jump off as soon as you have vision over your target.
  • Widowmaker is stronger in sniper duels against Hanzo due to her weapon using hitscan calculations rather than projectiles. However, if you use Sonic Arrows in these sniper duels, you can actually pre-fire your arrow just as she is slowly walking out of cover.

+1

  • Your arrows are the highest damage projectiles in the game, dealing 125 damage when fully charged. This enables you to instantly kill any 150 health targets with a single shot and melee combo. Additionally, if your target has an Orb of Discord on itself, or you are being buffed by a Mercy, Orisa’s Supercharger or Ana’s Nano Boost you can instantly kill with a single fully charged bodyshot.

+2

  • Since Wrecking Ball is really popular, it can be useful to use your Storm Arrows to quickly clear a path in Hammond’s Proximity Mines. Apart from this, you can just dodge his Piledriver with Lunge and quickly burst him down, his hitbox is huge.

The addition of Storm Arrows removed the frustrating one shotting that was possible with Scatter Arrows, but also gave depth to Hanzo as you can actually bait out several abilities by merely activating yours. Also, you should constantly think about how to efficiently use Lunge in every situation, this ability combined with Storm Arrows pushed Hanzo close to overpowered category… If you can actually aim.
