“8 + 2” no-brainer tips for playing MEI

Think of Mei as an off-tank utility hero that can mess up the enemy team in multiple tricky ways. We are going to focus on more specific counter-plays in this article to give you some ideas that you can use apart from the basic playstyle.

General tips

  • Your Icicle attack has no damage falloff, feel free to spam it at chokepoints. You can kill off most squishy targets with a headshot and a single body shot. You want to prioritize Icicle attacks over Endothermic Blaster in most situations. Practice aiming and timing against bots in custom game.
  • Cryo-Freeze is an exceptional ability when it comes to contesting objectives. Even if you are not playing Mei throughout a game, switching to her at the end to block the enemy team from capturing a point or pushing in a cart can be really useful.
  • Apart from contesting objectives, Cryo-Freeze is insanely good at baiting out enemy abilities like McCree’s stun, Ana’s sleep dart or Roadhog’s hook. Most lower SR players don’t abuse this technique, but it is an integral part of fully utilizing Mei. Don’t be afraid to cancel your Cryo-Freeze as soon as you have baited an important ability, go and deal more damage.
  • Your Ice Wall is one of the best utility abilities in the game, you can do much more with it than separating one or two targets from the enemy team to quickly finish them off. We are going to give you some hero specific tips below.

Hero specific tips

  • You can save multiple teammates from Sombra’s EMP ultimate with your Ice Wall. The timing can be hard, especially since Sombra’s rework as she doesn’t have to use translocator that much, but if you are expecting it, just tell your team to group up around you.
  • You can escape Junkrat’s Steel Trap by placing an Ice Wall right under your feet. You can also use this technique to break free your allies. This is quite situational, but still a useful interaction to remember.
  • Cryo-Freeze acts like a wall, meaning that you can actually save a teammate from Doomfist’s Meteor Strike, Dva’s Self Destruct or a Reinhardt’s Earthshatter. These can be hard to pull off, communicating with your teammates beforehand is extremely important.
  • Communicate with your team and boost everyone with the help of your Ice Wall to high ground on certain maps. One of the most obvious options is to boost your team to the “window” left side on Hanamura’s first point on the attacking side.

+1

You can disable Orisa’s Supercharger by putting and Ice Wall on top of it. This also works on your friendly Supercharger, meaning that you can actually save it if an enemy is focusing it hard. Just make sure you drop your wall as soon as they switch target.

+2

If timed properly, you can start to charge up an Icicle shot before fully freezing someone, as your Endothermic Blaster particles need time to reach your target. This takes some time to master, but it can be useful to ensure an extra Icicle shot on the frozen target.

With these sweet little tricks and tips, you can definitely up your Mei game. On the spot thinking is really important to fully utilize your Cryo-Freeze and Ice Wall, and communication is extra important!
