Tell us a bit about how long have you been playing video games? Why do you like playing them? How often do you play?

I have been playing video games since I was about 4 or 5. The first game I remember playing was “Duck Hunt” on my older brothers’ Nintendo. We also had arcade cabinets, such as “Streets of Rage,” in our basement that my brothers would procure on a rotating basis. Being the only girl in the family, being able to play video games was a way for me to feel “included with the boys.” I am a pretty avid gamer now, spending at least a couple of hours a day playing.

When have you started to play Overwatch? Why do you like it?

I started playing a few years ago. It was my first online first-person-shooter game experience. I initially played it on console then switched to PC, which I found to be an exciting and challenging transition. I love the art, mechanics and lore of the game. I also love the ability to play with others, which makes every game unique. I think OW also opened a lot of doors for me in terms of what I want to do with my life. It has inspired me to take chances and risks for things I am passionate about. For example, it has inspired me to try streaming because I think the game and the gaming industry needs more female representation. It has also inspired me to create art, including fan art, even if nobody sees it.

Why have you decided to try out Omnicoach? What was your first impression about Omnicoach before uploading any videos?

I liked the idea of personalized coaching based on my gameplay. I think OW itself is a bit lacking in terms of the training/tutorial and how to play the game (objectives, maps, heroes, etc), and although VODS are also useful, I thought the personalized aspect of Omnicoach was very appealing.  I also liked the fact that it was built by passionate enthusiasts of the game.

After using Omnicoach and receiving your first analysis, did it give you insights, info you were looking for? Did you get closer to any of your goals by using Omnicoach?

I think Omnicoach provided a wealth of information included in tips, analysis and useful tools. I think it also helped break down my larger goal of becoming a better player or reaching a higher SR into smaller more achievable goals, such as, improving my timing and positioning for Zenyatta’s charged shot.

What are the benefits of Omnicoach, what do you like the most?

Omnicoach helps me to be more objective in my games, which I think makes the game more enjoyable. I think there can be several frustrating aspects when playing an online multi-player game with various hero roles, especially when solo-queuing; Omnicoach helps me to focus on my own gameplay and how I can improve rather than being distracted by what my teammates could be doing differently.

What do you think are the disadvantages of Omnicoach?

I think there are some tips that can be somewhat general and therefore require judgement from the player based on the unique situations they face. I believe Omnicoach does however preface general hero tips and does a decent job explaining why you would want to use a more general rule of thumb (with Ana’s nano boost, for example). Overall, I think this helps the player understand that there are nuances to every situation, so this is not so much a disadvantage, but a   consideration when using Omnicoach. It also helped me realize that certain bad habits may have been formed playing in lower ranks, and should be corrected in order to climb. Speaking of SR, I am curious about the inclusion of SR when submitting videos and how that impacts the analysis, if at all. I sometimes leave the game too early and forget to record until my new SR is shown.

Do you have a main hero? Why do you like to play him/her the most?

I would say my main hero is Ana because she is bad-ass. I think I was turned on to her watching my favorite Ana player, “ryujehong.” I like to play her because I think her kit is powerful, she takes a lot of skill, and she can have a strong influence on the outcome of team fights. I am very excited for the new hero, Baptiste for similar reasons. Overall though, I find myself filling as a healer or tank.

(+1) When were you the most proud of yourself? Do you remember any particular moment, a sick play?

I think the games where I am shot calling- even if we don’t win or nobody listens to my calls- I am proud of myself. I think effective and positive comms are a work in progress for me and a very important aspect of playing this game. Although there are some rare games where my team has won flawlessly with zero voice comms, I still see the value in making use of voice chat. I like that Omnicoach recognizes that and some of the tips are related to communicating with your team to make the most out of a play/team fight.

Sometimes, even if others may not agree and at the risk of tilting the game, defending myself or others when someone is being toxic/offensive is important to me. Maybe because OW is my first online gaming experience, I have less tolerance for misogynistic toxicity when it appears. Although I can potentially make matters worse by responding to trolls/throwers, I believe I have a voice and a right to use it in building an inclusive gaming culture and community.

(+2) Anything else you play besides Overwatch? Would you be interested in Omnicoach if we provided coaching for other games?

I really enjoy Apex Legends at the moment. I like the pinging system as a way to communicate in addition to voice comms, and what I believe to be an overall higher chance of “carrying” your team when solo-queuing. I would be very interested in Omnicoach for Apex. I also play other games, such as, Divinity 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil 2.
