“8 + 2” NO-BRAINER TIPS

FOR PLAYING SOmbra

Sombra has always been in a weird place as a damage hero and professional teams almost exclusively played her as on off-support on some control point maps.

Thanks to the recent rework though, Sombra is much more versatile and fluid than ever before. You are not stuck in a set playstyle anymore and the rework also gives you an opportunity to be more creative and free with your ability usage.

General tips

  • Picking up hacked HP packs no longer charges your ultimate meter, making it less of a priority for you and your team. Nowadays you want to hack one mega and one small pack around an objective to help out your team while also making it harder for the enemy. Obviously you still want to have a “personal” pack for your Translocator.
  • Your Invisibility ability now has an unlimited active time just like your Translocator and these give you an insane amount of flexibility. Waiting for an important hack target is way easier to do and has a much higher priority. Also, using your EMP from Invisibility can be better than jumping in with your Translocator in some situations.
  • Alway have a defensive Translocator placed near a hacked HP pack as a backup plan. This is a basic technique, but it is more valuable now that you don’t have to worry about your Translocator timer. Alternatively, you can cancel your Translocator and place down a new in in the heat of battle when you have the chance.
  • A good general tip when using EMP in the classic way is to use Stealth first, throw your Translocator in, de-cloak then immediately port to your Translocator and use EMP. When using this technique the de-cloaking audio is going to be played at your original location, and you also completely eliminate the slight delay that happens when you use EMP after teleporting to your Translocator.

Hero specific tips

  • Don’t forget that you can see enemy heroes through walls when they are below half HP. You can also see if they have their ultimate ready whenever you hack someone, this too applies for EMP hacks. This is a really important aspect of Sombra, and you have to be really active at communicating all these things to your teammates on voice chat.
  • Your Hack ability is a really great tool for saving teammates as well, you can disrupt all of Doomfist’s abilities to completely mess him up or hack a Reinhardt while he is trying to pin one of your allies. Think about possibilities like these and try to help your team whenever possible.
  • Since hacked HP packs no longer grant you ultimate charge, you want to focus more on dealing damage. Practice tracking aim and try to always aim for the head. Your Machine Pistol is insanely deadly at close to medium range. You can be more present in fights since you don’t have to worry about your Translocator timing.
  • Your EMP is one of the strongest teamfight ultimates in the game, use it wisely. You can cancel channeling abilities with it like Roadhog’s Whole Hog or McCree’s Deadeye, and it also completely destroys barriers, Lucio’s Sound Barrier included. Additionally, always focus Zenyatta or Zarya after using EMP as most of their health is made out of blue shields, so they are easy to finish off quickly.

+1

  • If a Tracer manages to hit you with her Pulse Bomb, you can Translocate to disappear from the map briefly, thus avoiding death by explosion.

+2

  • Due to the new Translocator mechanics, you can actually fake an ultimate initiation. Some players from the enemy team might get scared and blow an important ultimate because of this.Simply throw your Translocator in just like you used to before the change and cancel it just as it hits the ground.

At the end of the day, playing the new Sombra is kind of similar to the previous one, apart from the fact that you can’t charge your ultimate with hacked HP packs and that you can’t contest objectives while invisible. Due to the Stealth and Translocator changes, you can be more calm and free while playing with Sombra, so go and have some fun hacking people.
