“8 + 2” NO-BRAINER TIPS

FOR PLAYING Widowmaker

A first person shooter would be nothing without a dedicated sniper class or weapon and that is no different when it comes to Overwatch. In most similar games snipers usually don’t have high mobility, but oh boy, this couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to Widowmaker.

It is probably no surprise to anyone that in order to be a successful sniper player, you must have great mechanical skills, so make sure you practice aiming a lot. Apart from that we are going to give you some general tips and also more specific ones that could improve your Widowmaker play.

General tips

  • Widowmaker’s Grappling Hook ability is the most important to master.  Hook jumping is really strong mechanic that you can abuse in multiple ways, be it jumping high in the air to go for quick headshots or going for a fast floor jump to reposition when someone is flanking you.
  • Map knowledge is power. You want to be really familiar with all the maps to be aware of standard sniper sightlines as well as more sneaky ones. In general you want to position yourself on highgrounds. Additionally, being comfortable with the layout of the maps is also important when it comes to efficient Grappling Hook jumps.
  • Venom Mine is most commonly used as a tool that helps you prepare for flankers, but it is also useful to throw it on an enemy support or damage hero in the middle of a teamfight. The extra damage is always welcome!
  • Be mindful about your Infra-Sight usage. The best way is to wait for the enemy team to group up after they just lost a teamfight, then use it in preparation for their push. Alternatively, when your team is on the attacking side, you basically do the same and use it just before your team pushes in. Never use it in the middle of a teamfight, it is not really worth it in most cases. An extra tip is to use your Infra-Sight as a counter to the enemy Widowmaker’s.

Hero specific tips

  • Going for a Genji kill can be scary if his Deflect is off-cooldown, as he can headshot you if he is good with timing and aiming. Go for few low charge shots on him to bait out his Deflect, you don’t have to worry too much about him hitting you back, as you will survive the smaller damage for sure. Additionally, you can place a Venom Mine at your feet in preparation for his Dash.
  • You are a really high priority target for Winstons as a Widowmaker, be careful with them. It is highly advised to practice headshotting them while they are jumping towards you, and quickly Grappling Hooking yourself to safety as they land. High skilled Winston players can use the butt jump technique though, so look out for this. Also if you are on a highground, you can just drop below, bait the Winston to chase you then Grappling Hook back up.
  • When dealing with flanking Tracers, you can use an aiming technique that is actually useful at all times against every hero. Just aim at her general direction and wait for her to run into your crosshair. Also you want to make a habit out of using quick melee as soon as you hit a fully charged body shot, as it will finish off any 150 hp heroes that are close enough for you, just like Tracer in this case.
  • Killing a Mercy is one of the highest value plays as Widowmaker. When she is using Guardian Angel to fly towards her target, don’t try to hit her while she is flying, it is too hard and unreliable. Aim at his Guardian Angel target, her movement slows down significantly as she is reaching her destination, making it a much more easy shot to land.

+1

  • Damaging Reinhardt’s shield is not really a high priority, instead, just keep your crosshair on the squishy targets behind his shield and wait for a Fire Strike or Earthshatter. These abilities give you the time to go for a quick headshot.

+2

  • When Lucio is using Sound Barrier, it locks him into a really predictable animation. Use this to your advantage and go for a headshot. If you manage to hit it, not only do you stop his ultimate at that teamfight, but force him to build it all back up, as his ultimate meter completely depletes at the beginning of the animation.

Playing Widowmaker well is not only about good mechanics and understanding of the matchups, but also communication and timing with your team. Play smart, wait for your team to make space for you, or you make space for them.
