“8 + 2” NO-BRAINER TIPS FOR PLAYING Winston

Everyone’s favorite monkey… I mean scientist has been dominating the competitive scene as a main tank for a long time. Primarily it is because of the Jump Jet ability that enables you to be exceptionally mobile, setting up kills aggressively then jumping back to safety. On top of that his Barrier Projector is quite spammable, the Tesla Cannon is easy to use for newcomers and able to dish out respectable damage to multiple targets at the same time. Winston’s ultimate ability Primal Rage works remarkably as a delaying or disrupting tool as well as an offensive finisher in some situations.

Now let’s see how to maximize our potential at the hero, shall we?

General tips

  • Flying around with your Jump Jet is something that everyone does, but you can squeeze out an extra few meters if you keep pressing your jump hotkey when landing. This is an important technique for gathering up with your team after a fight sooner, as well as reaching squishy enemy supports in the back line.
  • Try to abuse Barrier Projector whenever you can. If an enemy is inside the bubble, they can’t shoot targets outside of it either. Try to move in and out of it quickly when an enemy tries to aggressively push you inside the bubble.
  • Using Primal Rage instantly boost your maximum HP to a 1000 and heals you to full. Timing the use of it when you are just about to die can be a nice clutch play, just make sure you are not alone, otherwise you just give the enemy team a 1000 HP worth of ultimate charge.
  • Have you ever felt like you could have finished off someone, but you just jumped too far? You can solve this problem by going backwards for the fracture of a second while using your Jump Jet. This way Winston does a smaller jump and you still get the landing damage, making it easy to go for targets that are close, but not in range of your Tesla Cannon.

Hero specific tips

  • Quick melee is utterly important when playing Winston. Your Tesla Cannon only deals 60 damage per second, so it can be hard to finish off enemies alone. You also save ammo by doing this, lessening the chance of a mid-fight reload. On top of this, melee deals more damage to armored targets than your Tesla Cannon.
  • When playing versus a Mercy, position yourself between her and the target she heals. This way you can damage the Mercy freely even when she flies to her target with Guardian Angel. You can also block her when she tries to fly away if you position yourself well.
  • Always be wary of heroes that are strong versus you. Being close to a Reaper, Roadhog or D.Va  for example is extremely dangerous as they all have the firepower to quickly finish you off. Coordinate with your team when focusing the previously mentioned heroes.
  • Always try position your Barrier Projector in between the enemy front line and back line. This makes it harder for them to support each other, while also forces them to move in a position they don’t want to be in.

+1

  • Against Lucio and Zenyatta you can block their ultimate abilities with your Barrier Projector. Your bubble works like a wall in this case, essentially breaking their line of sight, thus you can completely block a Sound Barrier with a well timed bubble on top of Lucio.

+2

  • If you know the enemy Pharah has her Rocket Barrage, you can jump on top of her, use your Barrier Projector and essentially force her to kill herself with the splash damage on the bubble.

At first, Winston seems like an easy hero to play and do well with, but that is far from the truth. Using your abilities to their most potential while dishing out damage and surviving as much as you can is not easy by any means. There are plenty of sweet little tricks that you constantly have to think about while playing Winston. Hopefully we made it a bit easier for you.
